For some individuals, ASA are excellent alternatives to LASIK to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses. Candidates must be over 18 years of age, have a stable correction and have realistic vision expectations. Some contraindications for ASA is having keratoconus or another eye disease, history of collagen-vascular and autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis, and Sjögren’s syndrome), and being pregnant or nursing.
ASA surgery requires no incision. During the procedure, a drop is used to remove the cornea’s outer covering instead of creating a flap. Then, an excimer laser is used for 30 to 60 seconds to reshape the exposed cornea. A clear bandage contact lens is placed on your cornea for protection immediately afterward. Your surface covering then grows back during the next few days.
Prescription eye drops are typically used for several months following your procedure, and you’ll be fitted with a bandage contact lens for a few days to maximize your comfort while your eyes heal. Watch the video to the right for a demonstration of the procedure.
What is Custom Wavefront ASA?
ASA is a procedure to reshape the cornea so that light entering the eye can focus properly on the retina, thereby improving your vision. Custom or Wavefront ASA uses 3D imaging to map the internal optical aberrations in the eye to customize your treatment plan for your best possible outcome.
What kind of result can I expect?
In clinical trials and follow-up studies, the outcomes were found to be comparable to LASIK, with no difference in accuracy.
What are the risks of ASA?
As with any type of surgery, side effects and complications can occur. All potential side effects and complications will be discussed further at the time of the Laser Vision Correction consultation.
Because each patient responds differently to correction, we cannot promise perfect vision. Our goal is to give you the most visual freedom possible, by reducing your dependence on glasses or contacts. Sometimes there are cases where patients may need a small prescription for their best vision.
How long does the ASA procedure take?
This procedure typically takes approximately ten minutes per eye, with the actual laser treatment lasting less than one minute per eye. Patients are usually in the surgery suite for around 20 to 30 minutes and at our facility for no longer than 90 minutes. Patients should have someone to drive them home from our following the procedure.
