To determine if you’re a candidate for SBK (modern LASIK), please complete our LASIK candidacy quiz. We will contact you with the results and be happy to schedule a complimentary consultation to do further evaluation and answer all your questions.
SBK is performed beneath a very thin flap in the cornea, created using a femtosecond laser. The surgeon folds back the flap and reshapes the cornea using an excimer laser. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the reshaped area, and where the corneal tissue was removed. Watch the videos below for a demonstration of the procedure.

What is Custom Wavefront LASIK?
Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a procedure to reshape the cornea so that light entering the eye can focus properly on the retina, thereby improving your vision. Custom or Wavefront LASIK uses 3D imaging to map the internal optical aberrations in the eye to customize your treatment plan for your best possible outcome.
What kind of result can I expect?
More than 16 million LASIK procedures have been performed in the U.S. with very high patient satisfaction in visual outcomes. The high rate of patient satisfaction, averaging more than 96 percent, is due in part to the extremely low risk of complications from the surgery. Learn more about LASIK safety.
What are the risks of SBK?
As with any type of surgery, side effects and complications can occur. All potential side effects and complications will be discussed further at the time of the Laser Vision Correction consultation.
Because each patient responds differently to correction, we cannot promise perfect vision. Our goal is to give you the most visual freedom possible, by reducing your dependence on glasses or contacts. Sometimes there are cases where patients may need a small prescription for their best vision.
How long does the SBK eye surgery procedure take?
This procedure typically takes approximately 10 minutes per eye, with the actual laser treatment lasting less than one minute per eye. Patients are usually in the surgery suite for around 20 to 30 minutes and at our facility for no longer than 90 minutes. Patients should have someone to drive them home from our following the procedure.
How much time do I need to take off from work?
On the day of the procedure, you will be at the laser center for a few hours. After surgery, we recommend that you go home and rest. Eye shields will be provided to protect your eyes from bumps or rubbing while sleeping. The day after surgery, we will see you for a one day post-operative visit to check your vision and healing process after SBK. Most patients return to work the next day following surgery. For some ASA procedures, the healing process is typically three to four days.
At Capstone Vision, we believe in price transparency. Rather than confusing charges, co-pays, or deductibles from your insurance company, you see a flat and fair fee that reflects the value of the care you will receive with us. This fee includes all pre-op and post-op appointments with Dr. Emmert-Buck, eye drops, and if necessary, enhancement within one year.
